Some questions about horoscopes….

One day, aise hi, a thought crossed my mind..Someone around was discussing horoscopes according to the Hindu calendar. According to the Hindu horoscope, a person’s zodiac sign depends on the janmatithi (birthdate according to the Hindu Calendar), and the positions of the stars in the sky at the time of birth. Could someone please tell me, that if an expecting woman, travels like 100-200 miles, just before her delivery, and the position of the stars at her destination is different, will the future of her child change? In a matter of 5-6 hours?????

And in case of the English horoscope, the birthdate decides the zodiac sign of a person. So, can being born just a few hours before or after the deadline of 21st of every month (On 21st, the zodiac sign you are born into changes, it seems), change your characteristics and behavioral traits??

And if a few hours here and there change the behavior or future of a person yet to be born, can’t years and years on the earth  immensely change these of a living person too? What would you call this phenomenon then???

Irony??

Read an article in The Times of India yesterday ( You can read it here ) . It said that Iran leads the list of countries which still allow capital punishment to children and minors. Well, horrifying, yes….. but all the more so, given the fact that Iranian children’s movies are well-known all over the world for their sensitive presentation of the world of children!!!

Should I venture into fiction??

For a long time, I have been at a loss of ideas for new blog posts… and more than ideas, it’s the expression that I am not able form.

So i thought, why not try my hand at fiction? Stories and topics that have interested me, but never happened to me…. I guess I should give it a try!!

 

And ofcourse, may be I shall be able to express myself in a better way, ‘coz what is fiction but a reflection of the reality?? ;-)

There are many things to be done in life, and work, is just a means of getting the money to be able to do them! :-) :-P

Losing my views………

Was reading Sudha Murty’s ‘Wise and Otherwise’ yesterday(yeah, ok…i know its complete review is long overdue….patience guys…..). In one of those stories, Ms. Murty asks her son what he thinks are the 3 most revolutionary things of the 20th century, and he gives a really beautiful answer…..

It was then when i realized, that I would have been left speechless if I were to be asked the same question. I tried to think hardddd, but couldn’t really frame a nice answer…. :-( The same thing happened to me at the cycle rally (about which i wrote here), when I was asked to write a slogan on the banner….I scratched my head hard, but couldn’t come up with a real bright one, and had to make do with an average, so-so one. :-( That used to not be the case with me some time back, when I had an opinion about most of the things under the sun! and a nice quip always ready  to present it in a good way, as well!  Godd…what’s happening to me!! <talking to myself> Come back…come back!!!1

Perspectives, perspectives……… (4)

 Hasn’t anybody heard the saying, that “Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it!” ??Even if they haven’t, can’t they think about it themselves??

Is it necessary that a person who’s happy-go-lucky doesn’t feel bad?? Can’t it be that he does feel bad, and would also appreciate some kind words or deeds; but doesn’t want to publicize this and spoil his mood and that of the others around him???

Why can’t most people understand these simple things????

Many people think that belonging to a middle class family is a disadvantage; because you can’t climb the ladders of success as fast you would have, if you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth………

I beg to differ….times change, riches can go away in a flash; so belonging to a middle class family is an advantage; atleast you will still feel at home when they do!! Provided you remain rooted; however high you leap!!!

Just remembered a conversation I had some time back with a friend. He had forwarded me a pic of  10000 galaxies, captured in 1 image using some high-fundoo telescope. And I replied saying it was an ammazzing pic. Not stopping at just that, I went on to add that when we see pictures like this, we start feeling how small we are as compared to this huge huge universe!! Dwelling further on it, I added, that at the same time, we should also feel really big, since we can see all these galaxies, so what if only in a photograph. After all, we invented the camera!!!

Perspectives, perspectives………

I used to always crib that my new rented flat did not have an electric geyser fitted, and that I had to make do with a solar heater connection….until Sunday!! I had to set out from home early in the morning, and there was no power supply!!

At that time, I was so glad that things were the way they were!!!

Ahhhhhh……its all about our perspectives!!!!

Just look around!!! There’s so much to learn!!

Was returning home from office yesterday, when I stopped by at the key maker’s. There were a couple of other elederly men there, and were discussing current affairs, as usual. Because of the lack of options, I reluctantly started overhearing their conversation. Little did I know, that this would turn out to be the most sensible talk that I would heard in the entire day, or may be in the entire week too.

The key maker was kinda working late, so an elderly man there were asking him to hurry up. As an analogy, he said that “it is the law of nature, see, even birds go home when the sun sets. Only a few work late, like eagles, kites and vultures, but they too, only till a stipulated time.” This sentence kinda caught my attention. Then the conversation drifted to whether one can see such birds these days, and the same guy said that yes, you can easily find them at Parsi crematoriums, where the funeral rituals include laying up corpses of the deceased in empty wells, where they are preyed upon by kites and vultures, and eagles. “Strange are the ways of some”, he said. The other two people there laughed acknowledgingly. But then the man said, “There’s nothing wrong in that too….In some communities they burn, in some they bury; Parsis feed them to birds: So even after they are dead, they are used in feeding hungry birds. So what if it sounds odd, Parsis make difference to the world even as they leave it!”

Isn’t that insightful? I mean, being so much educated, and supposedly fitting into the ‘intellectual’ category of people; I had not even thought about why Parsis could be cremating their dead bodies that way; let alone thinking about them so profoundly. But an elderly,lonely, probably not very educated country man woke me up from my delusions. Philosophy, my friends, isn’t the copyright of Paulo Coelho or Ayn Rand; or even the myriad Yogis and sages. Philosophy is delivered by any one who wants to think, and say his thoughts aloud!!!

Well, I am generally delighted when I get to know anything that is informative and at the same time intelligent and insightful; and given that, the man surely made my day!!!

Life is unfair!!! Get used to it!!!

Enjoy the happy moments to the fullest….and ignore the not so happy ones completely!!

And most of all, keep smiling….If nothing else, it atleast keeps u cheered!  :-)

The importance of other people…..

Was consoling a friend who was very depressed, and was giving him some tidbits of advice… Very spontaneously, I said something to him that amazed not only him, but me also….

While telling him to do this and that, I happened to say that “I know this is very easy for me to say, ‘coz it’s not happening to me; but then why would we need other people in our lives if we could deal with everything??”  He looked up, and I looked up too… I had just created and quoted a valuable one-liner, out of the blue…. He smiled, the quote was a good break from the sermon i was giving him, and was sure worth a thought….and plus, it was a pleasant break from his depressed line of thinking, too!!

Seriously guys, man is a social animal, especially because he needs someone apart from himself, to show him the different perspectives of the multidimensional world. Any takes on this?

Angry? Don’t count till 10, count the prime numbers!!!

An age-old practise says, that when you are angry, do not react immediately, wait and count till 10….. as counting till 10 gives you the best thing to prevent anger….time! Once you overcome that one moment of anger without reaction, you realise that the situation did not really need any reaction.
Hmmm, quite a true saying,but does it really work? For one, its too old to keep implementing time and again. Two, its too short, takes approx. 5 seconds to complete, which is too short a time period for certain people(sometimes like me..hehe). Three, its boring, and all the more so if you increase it to 100 for getting more time. I in fact even tend to brush through these numbers so fast, that they are barely comprehensible.. Now, it’s not that I need to revise my numbers and so have to say them slowly, but then just the real purpose of counting vanishes!!!

Kavya Vishwanathan, the creator of Opal Mehta (the nerdish heroine of  the much-talked about book “How Opal Mehta got kissed, got wild, and got a life..”) gave me another alternative to this, and a nice one, too! When Opal Mehta got nervous or anxious in the book, she made her rant prime numbers, until she calmed down again…. Too nerdy you think?? Naah…. I gave it a try, and it really works.
One not so fine day( :) ) , I was really irritated and wanted to burst out on somebody. Luckily, there was no one around, so I had to look out for some other way. I saw the copy of this book in front of me, and remembered Opal’s technique. “Why not give it a try”, I thought. So i went, 1, “No..No..Wat nonsense, 1 is not a prime number!!”, I laughed. The first ounce of anger dissolved. Then, 2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19,23,29,31, ………………………. 37, 41, 43, …………………………………..53, 59……………………………………………….., I went on scratching my brain. Just in a minute or so, I forgot why I was trying to recollect prime numbers, and got immersed into the task of rcollecting them.
The mercury levels of my hot hot brain dropped to normal, and I realised I was really enjoying this task of recollecting prime numbers. It was like a challenge to me, I wanted to see how much I can stretch myself….Yeah you do get bored after some while, but your purpose is very much served!! The flip-flop of your mind gets reset, and ready to dive into some other more important thoughts!!(Other than the reason you got angry for, not just other than prime numbers…heeheehee.. :D )

Looking at this whole situation, don’t you think that the depth our feelings is just a measure of how much importance we assign to it? Or how much of other important stuff is happening in our lives??

Random sailings….

Was sailing on the unstable ship of my mind, over a vast sea of past memories….. and docked on this particular line quoted by a speaker at a Gudi Padwa rally….

Sir Winston Churchill, while addressing the British Parliament, a little while before India got Independance, said about us, “Don’t give them freedom, ’cause they are not a nation, just a population!”

Does it touch a chord somewhere deep inside? Or to go with the current  lingo, does it shake a plank deep in the base somewhere???

Is money equivalent to Happiness?

So true is the above sentence, isn’t it!! just happened to see the above picture stored somewhere on my PC, and it started a chain of memories in my mind. Just jotting down a few of them here.

When i was in my 3rd year of Computer Engineering, We had a debate in my Principles Of Economics and Management class, titled “Money motivates!” We were supposed to refute the argument, so my main argument then was…

“Why does one want money, to buy luxury, to feel the prestige, and such things, all basincally leading to what? Getting Happy!!! So the main motive in one’s life is not getting rich or earning money, just for the sake of it…If he could get happy by some other means, he would very well do it, and not care a damn about money!!”

“Point taken”, agreed many……

Well this also reminds me of another story that i’d read long ago in Marathi. Will attempt to translate it here. Its called, “Happy Man’s Shirt”

Once upon a time, there was a man who wanted to know the secret of happiness. He was ready to go to any lengths to do it. So he prayed, and meditated, and fasted, for a long long time. Finally, a holy sage appeared before him. “What do you want son?”, he asked. “I want to know the secret of happiness..”, the man replied. “Fine, I’ll tell it to you”, the sage replied,” but before that u will have to bring me a shirt worn by a man who is truly happy..” “Ok sir, that i shall do immediately….how long will that take!!” , exclaimed the man.

And lo, he started off…He went to his friends whom he thought were happy, and asked them if they were.. They replied in negative. He went to the rich and famous, but no luck there too….As a sharp contrast, he tried the poorer ones, but to no avail. He went to places, travelled to many countries and cities and towns, but he did not find anyone who admitted that he was totally happy!

Tired and frustrated, he was walking through a forest. A river flowed nearby. On the banks of the river sat a man, humming the most cheerful tune he’d ever heard. He played with the waves in water, he called out to the birds that flew past…Overall, he seemed very content, very HAPPY. Skeptical, yet somewhat homeful, the man went to him, an asked him whether he was happy. “Ofcourse, I am very very happy. I have no complaints about life.” The man was overjoyed, and just as he was about to ask the happy man for his shirt, he realized, that the man wasn’t wearing a shirt at all!!! He asked the man about it, and he replied,”Shirt!! well I never wear one at all!!” :-)

Nice story na!! And worth giving a thought, too!

Well these are just a few thoughts that occured to me when i saw that pic…More about this, later!! :-)

The pursuit of Happyness……

How will you define happiness? How will you measure happiness?  Does happiness come from being always able to feed your family enough food? Does it come from paying your taxes on time? Does it come from seeing ur child being well-educated? Does it come from being able to solve th Rubik’s cube puzzle in less than 30 minutes?

Well, to Will Smith, aka, Chris Gardner, it came from suffering through all possible hardships, and achieving a goal so distant, so remote!!! And based on nothing….(He just sees people outside the stock exchange, and feels they are the ones who really look happy..)

Well going by a different route this time, lets discuss(rather than me blabbering away…hehe!) what brings happiness to us…… Waiting for ur comments…. :-)

Dream #2

And once I was walking on the road, and casually turned to look back. A monkey, one of the small kinds, with a dangerous red face was following me!! I panicked!!! Seriously!! As I kept walking I realized that the monkey was still persistently following me…i didn’t even realize when i began running…The monkey…ran harder!! Oh my God!!! “Oh!! My!! God!!! What should I do?? Why is a stupid but still dangerous monkey attacking me??”  Common sense and patience both betrayed me at that time.. I kept running…. The monkey wouldn’t budge…I eneterd a narrow lane, the monkey followed. I entered a proper “Patli Gali” , Could still see the monkey right back there, i turned, traversed, dodged, but no luck!! Terrified, I ran harder, but started getting out of breath soon!! As i started losing speed, the gap between the monkey and me narrowed…And there…he was…right next to me!! I closed my eyes…but opened them, when  I heard the monkey talk..THE MONKEY TALKED!!!! 

And he said,”Gotcha…Raced you!!!!!!I’m first!!Yipppeee!!” And he ran way!!

And I stood there open-mouthed, gaping at my predator(who turned out to be my competitor!!)…..

Any clues why i get dreams like that??? Plz lemme know!! :-) :-D :-(

Dream #1

And there…..the world was coming to an end!!!! Well if not the world, atleast my city!!! There was flood everywhere!! People were running(naah..swimming) helterskelter to save their lives!! The water levels were rising fast and furiosly!! And the water….it was not the usual color(<less>), it was dirty, yellow in color….It was the color of the evil!! It looked as though the Almighty was washing away all the evil from the city!! With commotion all around, a few of us managed to catch hold of a canoe!! If we could somehow reach out of the city safely, may be we could avert the danger…may be…just may be we could be the only survivors of the Dooms day!

And so we proceeded, rowing the boat ferociously amidst the deafening chaos of humanity(if any) trying to battle the devil’s fury!!

 And suddenly!!!! And oh so suddenly, appeared the Devil, himself!! All of us shuddered, cringed, drew back….Standing right opposite us, the devil started threatening us!!! “I will kill all of you!! you humnas don’t deserve to live!!! I WILL KILL YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!”

All of us were stunned…We didn’t know what to do….Just a while back we were evenly spread around the boat, rowing it to safety, and now, we were nothing but a collected mass of people at one end of the boat, looking dreadedly at the demon on the other side…

Suddenly I whispered to my fellow- ‘mass’…. “Lets all jump together, the demon on the other side of the boat will be thrown off!!Spread the word…”  The word spread…

We all looked at each other……1…………2…………………3!!!! And there we went!!!! The devil was thrown up in the sky, and we started rowing the boat as fast as we could so that he would not fall back in the boat….The boat changed directions…..the huge bosy of the demon was being pulled down by gravitation…”Cmon….a li’l more”, “Oh my God..He’s coming”, “Row Row Row!!!” and thud!!!! Fell the demon…and not in our boat! :-) And although we worked hard for it and narrowly missed failure, it was still sweet success!! We all were rejoiced, and started rowing our way to safety, and creation of a good new world!!

“Uhh..What was that!!” I woke up with a start! :-) Whoa!! What a dream!!:-D

Life After Death…..

With all due respect to the movie (Mind you, I simply loved it!!) ,would the brave fivesome of Aamir, Siddharth, Kunal, Sharman, and Soha react in the same way if a pilot they did not personally know got killed and blemished due to a MIG accident, as they did when their very good friend(R Madhavan) met that fate?
